HobIe Island Check List for ensuring you boat is in good order.

Ama’s – Check integrity of shear pins that hold the Ama’s out, they are made of plastic and are designed to break if you hit something saving other more expensive parts from damage. Your Island would have come with 2 spares on the arms so if in doubt replace.

Ama Securing Head. The arms of the Ama have a plastic fitting that you push in to the ball head on the hull. This locks the Ama’s in the fully extended position. You must check for wear on this fitting. If you secure it and find it to be loose then check tension of the ball head it attaches too and or check for wear of the actual locking mechanism.

Hatches Middle and Rear – Check middle and rear hatch seals for tension. They will stretch over time, which will reduce their capacity to seal. If stretched, replace. Lubricate with silicone spray before each use.

Front Hatch – Check seal has not become dislodged and check tension of shock cord that secures hatch in place. If not enough tension, loosen off plastic securing bolt from hull, pull through some of the shock cord and tie new knot. Check tension again and trim excess shock cord.

Bungs – Check that you have all bungs, keeping in mind there are 2 different types. Larger ones for the Aka’s and upper rear hull and one smaller one for the hull located under the rudder. Ensure your boat has spare bungs stored on board, at least one of each.

Rudder Pins – Check rudder pin for damage, this will only occur if it has had an impact. Ensure your boat has spare rudder pins, usually located in the rear hatch.

Rudder Control Lines – Check steering line tension at the rudder and adjust if loose.

Mast – The mast is a 2 piece mast – ensure it is in good order.

Mast Base – Check ball bearing have not been lost and general integrity of the whole fitting. Lubricate with silicone spray.

Sail Controls – Check ropes for sail control and furler, checking for abrasion and wear, if dirty, dried out and stiff place in bucket of water with small amount of detergent. Soak overnight.

Sail – Check whole of sail looking for any holes or tears. Minor issues can be easily repaired with sail tape. Any more damage than that contact Hobie for your local sail maker to repair.

Sail Batons- Check batons in the sail for tension and adjust if needed. Make sure they have not broken which is very rare but will do damage to sail. Replace if required.

Baton Tension – The sail should have a slight natural curl induced by the baton tension. To tension baton, unfurl the sail and lay on ground, push the in baton into the baton pocket all the way in. Ensure the end of the baton sits snugly into its pocket. To set the correct tension apply slight pressure to the end of the baton so that is forms and natural curl and tie securing strings. Do not over tension.

Cleats – Check the tension of the bolts securing the cleats and ensure they are not loose and not over tightened. Check for correct opening and closing of cleats. Lubricate with Silicone Sprat.

General look over hull for any signs of damage but they are pretty robust and shouldn’t be an issue.

Trolley – Check for correct tyre pressure if using sand type tyres.

Hull – If boat has not been used for an amount of time. Check hull integrity by opening hatch during first sail and checking for water. There will always be a small amount in the hull but any abnormal amounts should be fully investigated. Best method is to connect an air blower to rear hull bung hole and listen for any sounds of leaks or go over with smoke devise to visually see any leaks.

Safety equipment – Ensure your boat has some form of bailing device on board and in easy access when sailing. The hobie hand pump is one of the best for the job. Ensure the boat meets the local governing bodies safety rules. i.e PFD’s, Radio’s etc.
